Precision machining plays an important role in steel structure fabrication. Proper machining processes ensure dimensional accuracy, structural reliability, and smooth installation on site. During the machining of steel structure components, strict quality control and standardized operation procedures must be followed.

1. Inspect Component Deformation Before Machining

Before machining steel structure components, it is essential to check the straightness, flatness, and torsional deformation of each component.

Components with deformation exceeding the specified standards should not proceed to machining. Operators must carefully inspect the condition of raw components before processing instead of focusing only on machining operations.

Excessive deformation, including bending, uneven surfaces, or twisting, may affect the accuracy of milling, planing, and other machining processes, resulting in unusable processed surfaces and affecting the final assembly quality.

Therefore, a pre-machining quality inspection is a necessary step to ensure machining accuracy.

2. Confirm the Machining Reference Line Accurately

The determination of the machining reference line is a critical step in steel structure component processing.

If the previous fabrication process has already marked the machining reference line through punching or marking, the operator should verify the overall machining length with the previous process before starting machining.

After confirming the accuracy of the reference line and total dimension, machining can proceed.

If only the required finished length is provided without a marked reference line, the operator must determine the machining reference line based on the actual component dimensions. The measurement should start from the center position of the raw component length and extend toward both ends to ensure accuracy.

The reference line should never be measured from the rough surface of the raw component, as uneven and irregular surfaces cannot provide reliable positioning data.

3. Proper Positioning and Fixing Before Machining

Before machining begins, steel components must be correctly positioned on the machining fixture.

The component should be placed firmly against the positioning supports of the fixture, ensuring that the machining surface is maintained at a 90-degree angle with the cutting tool.

After confirming the correct position, the component must be securely clamped using proper fixtures to prevent movement during machining.

Reliable positioning and fixation are essential for maintaining machining accuracy and preventing dimensional deviations.

4. Follow Safety Procedures During Machining Operations

Before starting machining operations, operators must ensure that all safety protection measures are properly implemented.

During cutting or machining, attention should be paid to the stability of the fixed component. If any abnormal movement, vibration, or displacement occurs, the operation should be stopped immediately and corrective measures should be taken.

The cutting depth and feed rate must be controlled according to machining standards. Excessive cutting force may affect surface quality, dimensional accuracy, and tool performance.

Following standardized machining procedures ensures that the finished component meets required precision standards and provides reliable performance during steel structure installation.
